Kanye West Debuts New Short Film At Cannes l Beenreal.com

Rapper and fashion designer Kanye West takes a second shot at directing with Cruel Summer – an interesting short film and art installation endeavor which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last night. The immersive seven-screen experience was conducted in a pyramid-dressed parking lot by the water before a 200-strong audience. Inspired by a soundtrack-supplied via the upcoming all-star G.O.O.D. Music album

of a similar title, the film stars Kid Cudi, Razane Jammal, Ali Suliman and comedian Aziz Ansari. Shot in Qatar, the story plays around a Lamborghini car thief who falls for a beautiful blind Arabic girl whose father will consent to them marrying if he can help her see. More than a storyline, however, the experimental piece attempts to provide a full audio-visual movie experience using split screens to imitate “life” — i.e. our limited perception of the world due to the human inability to catch or process everything that is happening around us at once.

A little backstory to this clip before you watch it:

Will Smith’s father abandoned him and his mother when he was a child, and when Will was finally getting into show business and making a name for himself, he tried to sneak his way back into his life like nothing happened. Will co-wrote this episode, and James Avery (Uncle Phil) said “this scene was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to shoot in my life. Every emotion, every word.. that was Will”

Will was actually supposed to play it off and then walk away, and there was originally an alternate scene that was supposed to happen, but he actually completely cut out what was supposed to be said, and did all of his own dialogue. The hug at the end of this scene is completely genuine, and this was a stepping stone in Will’s career where he started to take on the “do what feels, sounds, and looks right” approach to his acting.

I’m having a serious case of office envy thanks to the Rachel Roy’s Parisian-inspired midtown showroom! I simply adore the neutral color palette but the details are what really stand out — the beautiful raw oak floor, the handmadeporcelain pendants, the rich wood tables perched on acrylic legs, and the charming moldings on bright white walls. And can we just take a minute to talk about Rachel’s desk? The vintage screen turned modern glass desk might just be my favorite piece in the space…this is most definitely an idea I plan to use in the future. Everything about is showroom is right — it’s exactly the kind of office that I hope to have one day. What does your dream office look like?
